What dictation apps actually cost

The number on the pricing page is the least useful part. What decides your bill is how a tool charges — and this category has four different answers to that, which is why comparing the headline figures side by side tells you almost nothing.

The clearest symptom : the word “free” means four different things on this list. Free forever on your own machine. Free with no word cap. Free up to a weekly cap. And a one-off allowance that never comes back. They are all labelled the same way.

Free forever on your machine, pay only for the cloud

Spokenly

On-device models cost nothing, with no usage limit and no account. Their paid tier is shown at $8.33 a month, billed $99.99 a year, and it adds cloud models on top.

Pick it when : You work offline, or you would rather never send audio anywhere. This is the only model on the list where the free option is the whole product rather than a sample of it.

Buy it once

Superwhisper

A one-off licence at $249.99, alongside $8.49 a month or $84.99 a year. Its free tier has no word cap.

Pick it when : You already know you will still be dictating in three years. Below that, the yearly subscription stays cheaper — and it does not commit you to a tool whose place in your habits is unproven.

Per seat, every month

Wispr Flow, Willow

Wispr Flow: free for 2,000 words a week, then $15 per user a month, or $12 paid yearly; their team tier starts at $23, or $18 yearly. Willow: a free tier too, then $15 or $12 paid yearly, with a business tier at $35 or $28.

Pick it when : You are buying for more than yourself, or you want the vendor to keep shipping. It is also the model that costs the most if your usage is occasional.

A one-off allowance, then a subscription

Aqua Voice

1,000 words free — once, not per month — then $10 a month, or $8 paid yearly. Their top tier is $30, or $24 yearly.

Pick it when : You want to try before deciding. Worth knowing the allowance does not come back: this is a trial wearing the word “free”.

And ours

SpeakApp charges in euros, and its free plan is a tier, not a trial : every feature is there, and what the paid plans lift is how much of it you use in a month. The grid lives on our pricing page — in French, like most of this site for now.

We do not restate it here. A price written on a second page is a second place to be wrong the day it changes.

How these figures were read

Each vendor’s pricing page was opened on 12 September 2026. Where a page hides one side of a monthly/yearly switch, that side is not guessed here — Spokenly’s monthly figure is behind their toggle and is therefore absent from this page rather than calculated. Superwhisper is the exception worth naming : their pricing page returns an error and their grid only renders in a browser, so their figures come from our own reading of it on 11 September, recorded on the French page linked below.

Nothing is converted into euros, and no accuracy ranking is published : every figure of that kind in this category comes from a benchmark its own vendor designed. Reconfirm any price with the vendor before buying — this page can go stale without knowing it, which is what the date is for.
