Windows voice typing isn’t working
You do not need a list of fixes — you need Microsoft’s own conditions. Their support page states three, and almost every failure is one of them : you must be connected to the internet, have a working microphone, and have your cursor in a text box.
The first one is the one nobody expects. Windows voice typing does not run on your PC. In Microsoft’s words, it “uses online speech recognition, which is powered by Azure Speech services”. Offline, it opens, it looks alive, and it writes nothing.

How to start it, in case that is the whole problem
Click into the field you want to write in, then press the Windows logo key and H together. The dictation toolbar opens and starts listening on its own — there is no second button to press, which is why people often think it has not started.
If you need it to work with no connection
Windows has a second, separate feature for that, and the two get confused constantly because both are “the Windows dictation”. Voice access is the one built to run offline : Microsoft describes it as letting you control your PC and author text using only your voice and without an internet connection. It is a different tool with a different setup, not a setting inside voice typing.

SpeakApp dictates at the same level — your words go wherever the cursor already is, in any application. What it adds is the other direction : having your AI’s answer read back to you while you keep working.
It does not fix the offline case. Our dictation sends audio to a service too, exactly like voice typing does. If working with no connection is your requirement, Voice access above is the honest answer, and we would rather point at it than pretend otherwise.
Method
Every condition and every quotation on this page comes from the two Microsoft support pages linked above, opened on 12 September 2026 and returned successfully. Nothing is taken from a third-party article, and no fix is invented to pad a list : when the vendor publishes the conditions, the troubleshooting follows from them. Menu wording moves between Windows releases, so this page names what to check rather than a path to click through.
