How to make ChatGPT read its answers aloud

ChatGPT gives you two ways to hear it. Read aloud plays a reply you pick: in the ChatGPT mobile app, it is one of the actions under each answer. Voice turns the chat into a spoken conversation in which ChatGPT answers out loud. Read aloud waits for you to press it, and Voice speaks only inside a voice conversation you are holding. To hear every ChatGPT reply as soon as it is ready, along with your Claude Code and Codex sessions, SpeakApp reads them aloud one after another, and you say “ok” to answer the conversation that spoke.

Read aloud: hear the reply you pick

In the ChatGPT mobile app, Read aloud is one of the actions under a reply, next to Copy and Share, according to OpenAI's app FAQ. Read aloud plays the answer you chose. The next answer needs its own press, so you go back to the conversation each time a new reply comes in.

Voice: talk with ChatGPT out loud

ChatGPT Voice is a spoken conversation: you talk, and ChatGPT answers out loud. Its options sit under Settings > Voice, where you pick Live, Advanced or Standard and choose a voice. A Voice conversation can keep going while you use other apps or while your phone is locked. You can ask ChatGPT to speak faster or slower, but OpenAI says precise playback-speed controls are not currently available.

In the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS and Windows, Voice in Desktop goes further: it can start tasks, check their progress and coordinate several agents through one conversation. It has its own pricing and limits.

Hear every reply as it arrives

Read aloud and Voice both keep you inside ChatGPT. When you work with several AI sessions at once, the replies land in different windows, and each one waits for you to come and read it. SpeakApp brings them to you. It reads each finished reply aloud, one after another, as soon as it is ready. You say “ok”, speak your answer, then say “enter”, and your message goes straight into the conversation that spoke, without hunting for its window, touching the keyboard or looking at the screen.

Each conversation gets its card in the reading toast, the panel SpeakApp shows above your windows, with read, skip, later, reply and open, and the widget's circle counts what is still waiting. A ChatGPT chat, a Claude Code session and a Codex task can be followed side by side this way, all by voice. How the reading loop works.

Where it works today: ChatGPT on the web in Chrome or Edge with the SpeakApp extension, Claude Code in the Claude desktop app (Code tab) and the Codex app for Windows. SpeakApp doesn't read the ChatGPT desktop app today. The full list, app by app, is on the features page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make ChatGPT read its answer aloud?

Use Read aloud on the reply: in the ChatGPT mobile app, it is among the actions under each answer. For a spoken back-and-forth, start a Voice conversation instead.

Can ChatGPT read every answer automatically?

In a Voice conversation, yes, because ChatGPT answers out loud. In a regular chat, Read aloud plays the reply you pick. SpeakApp reads every ChatGPT reply on the web as soon as it is ready, without a press.

Can I change the reading speed?

In Voice, you can ask ChatGPT to speak faster or slower. OpenAI says precise playback-speed controls are not currently available.

Does SpeakApp work with the ChatGPT desktop app?

Not today. SpeakApp reads ChatGPT on the web, in Chrome or Edge, with the SpeakApp extension.

Can I answer ChatGPT without the keyboard?

In Voice, yes. With SpeakApp, you say “ok”, speak your answer, then say “enter”, and it goes into the ChatGPT conversation that spoke.

Is SpeakApp free?

SpeakApp has a free plan with every feature, within volume limits. Paid plans are on the pricing page.
