Claude Desktop voice: hear each reply, answer by voice
SpeakApp reads each reply of your Claude Desktop sessions aloud, one after another, and you say “ok” to answer the session that spoke. It works with the Code tab of Claude Desktop, for sessions that run on your computer, for listening and for answering by voice. Claude's own voice mode is for talking with Claude in one conversation, and its help page says that in Claude Code, dictation is available but voice mode isn't. SpeakApp reads the replies of your Code sessions aloud, so you can work elsewhere in the meantime. Dictation types at your cursor and is a separate function from the reading loop. Keep reviewing code and diffs on screen.
How does the loop work in Claude Desktop?
When Claude finishes a reply in a Code session, SpeakApp reads it aloud in turn, without sending you back to its window. You say “ok”, speak your answer, then say “enter”, and your message goes straight into the session that spoke, without hunting for its window, touching the keyboard or looking at the screen.
With several sessions running, replies wait their turn. Each conversation gets its card in the reading toast, the panel SpeakApp shows above your windows, with read, skip, later, reply and open, and the widget's circle counts what is still waiting.
Suppose one Code session is refactoring a module while another investigates a failing test. The test investigation finishes first and its reply is read to you. You say “ok”, ask it to check the test setup, then say “enter”: the message goes to that session, not to whichever window you touched last.
Which Claude Desktop sessions does SpeakApp follow?
The Code tab of Claude Desktop, for sessions that run on your computer. SpeakApp reads each conversation at its source, on your disk for desktop apps. A conversation that runs remotely in the cloud leaves no trace on your disk, so SpeakApp can neither read it nor reply to it.
How is this different from Claude's own voice mode?
Claude has a voice mode of its own: a two-way spoken conversation in which you speak to Claude and Claude answers out loud. According to Claude's help center, it is a beta feature on mobile, in Claude Desktop and on the web. You start it with the sound wave symbol at the lower right of the chat window, stop it with “Stop”, and switch between text and voice in the same conversation.
That voice mode is not what reads your Code sessions to you. The same help page is explicit about Claude Code: dictation is available, voice mode isn't. SpeakApp covers that part. It reads each finished reply of your Code sessions aloud, one after another, so you can work elsewhere in the meantime, and your spoken answer goes into the session that spoke. The detailed comparison is on the page about an alternative to Claude's voice mode.
Can you see which session needs you?
Yes. The Control Center shows which session is working, done, waiting or stuck, so you can open the right one. It is available for Claude Desktop in the Code tab, for local sessions.
Where else can you listen, and where can you answer by voice?
Listening and answering are two separate lists. SpeakApp also follows the apps below.
| App | Listen | Answer in the session by voice |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Desktop (the Code tab, local sessions) | Yes | Yes |
| The Codex app for Windows | Yes | Yes |
| ChatGPT on the web, in Chrome with the SpeakApp extension | Yes | Yes |
| Cursor | Yes | No, dictate into its field |
| VS Code | Yes | No, dictate into its field |
| Claude.ai on the web, with the SpeakApp extension | Yes | No, dictate into its field |
The features page has the full list, app by app.
What is the difference between dictation and answering a session?
Dictation types at your cursor in any text field, so you can dictate a note or a message in a field you chose. It is a separate function from the reading loop. The reply, “ok”, your answer, “enter”, goes into the session that spoke.
Should you still review the code on screen?
Yes. A spoken reply tells you what Claude said, not whether the change is right. Open the session to inspect diffs, file names and exact identifiers, and keep the voice for explanations and follow-ups.

Frequently asked questions
How can I hear the replies of my Claude Desktop Code sessions and answer by voice?
Use SpeakApp with the Code tab of Claude Desktop. Each finished reply is read aloud, one after another. Say “ok”, speak your answer, then say “enter”: your message goes into the session that spoke.
Does Claude Desktop have a voice mode of its own?
Yes. Claude's help center describes a voice mode in beta on mobile, in Claude Desktop and on the web, a two-way spoken conversation. For Claude Code, it says dictation is available but voice mode isn't. SpeakApp is separate: it reads the replies of your Code sessions aloud and sends your spoken answer into the session that spoke.
Does saying “ok” answer the window I have open?
No. It answers the session that spoke, the one on the card in the reading toast, whichever window is in front.
Can I follow Claude Desktop, Codex and ChatGPT sessions in one queue?
Yes. Replies from the Code tab of Claude Desktop, the Codex app for Windows and ChatGPT in Chrome (through the SpeakApp extension) wait in the same queue, and you answer each one in its own session.
Is dictation the same as answering a session by voice?
No. Dictation types wherever your text cursor is, in any text field. The reply sends your spoken answer into the session that spoke.
Can I listen to Claude sessions running in the cloud?
No. A conversation that runs remotely in the cloud leaves no trace on your disk, so SpeakApp can neither read it nor reply to it.
How do I know which session needs me?
The Control Center shows which session is working, done, waiting or stuck, and you open the right one. It covers the Code tab of Claude Desktop, for local sessions.
How do I turn on voice typing?
In Windows, voice typing opens with the Windows logo key + H once the cursor is in a text field. SpeakApp's dictation also types at the cursor in any text field, the Claude Desktop message box included, and its dictionary learns your words.
How do I dictate in Claude?
Claude's help describes dictation in Claude Code, and a voice mode for talking with Claude in a conversation. With SpeakApp, you dictate at the cursor in any text field; after a reply from the Code tab is read to you, you say ok, speak your answer, then say enter, and it goes into that session.
