Gemini Live alternative

SpeakApp is an alternative to Gemini Live for people working on a Windows desktop with several AI threads at once. A real-time voice conversation addresses one counterpart at a time — the one you made active. SpeakApp does the opposite: it queues the replies from all your conversations, reads them one after another, and lets you stop whenever you want.

The real difference is not the voice, it is the number of counterparts

Gemini Live is good at what it does, and this page says nothing to the contrary. What is compared is what each architecture imposes. A permanently open voice loop has a mechanical consequence: you always speak to the active session, and you switch by hand. Most people do not work that way — they start several tasks at different moments, and each one finishes when it finishes.

Pick SpeakApp if…

  • you have more than one conversation running. That is what it is built for: one queue, one voice, and no choice to make about which one to listen to.
  • you want to triage rather than listen to everything. A full reply read out loud is long; you can skip, come back, jump fifteen seconds ahead, or ask for a summary instead of the whole text.
  • your work lives on a PC. SpeakApp is a Windows 10 and 11 desktop application that acts inside the software you already use — not a place you have to move into.
  • you would rather be notified than read to. The "notify instead of read" mode simply says a reply has landed.

Stay on Gemini Live if…

  • you want a continuous conversation, with interruptions both ways. That is precisely what a real-time loop does well, and SpeakApp does not replace it.
  • you are on a phone, or away from your workstation. SpeakApp is a desktop application.
  • you stay inside Google's ecosystem and have no need for another tool reading elsewhere.

What we left out of the table

  • Past roughly six hours, a conversation does not come back into the queue, and nothing tells you. "Leave, everything waits for you" is true for half a day; it is not unlimited waiting.
  • A conversation executed remotely is invisible. SpeakApp reads at the source — the trace on your disk, or the page in your browser. A session whose execution moves to the cloud leaves no dialogue trace to read.
  • Windows only as of today: no macOS, no Linux, no mobile.

Frequently asked questions

Does SpeakApp work with Gemini?

Yes. SpeakApp reads what is displayed on screen and types at the caret, so it does not depend on an integration from the assistant. It works with desktop applications and, through the browser extension, with their web versions. No cooperation from the assistant is needed and nothing is installed on its side.

Can it read two replies at the same time?

No, and that is deliberate: two simultaneous voices cannot be listened to. Replies enter a queue and are read one after another, by a single voice. You can skip the current one, go back, or remove a conversation from the queue without touching the others.

What happens when an AI stalls?

That is the case no system notification can report, since nothing is actually happening. End-of-reply detection tells a finished conversation apart from a stalled one or one waiting on you, and says so. It is the engine the rest of the reading features depend on.

Is a subscription required?

Not to start: the free plan at €0 contains every feature, with volume limits rather than switches. Paid plans lift those limits. The tiers and their current amounts are on the pricing page.

Where this page's claims come from

  • The features named above — multi-session queue, end-of-reply detection, "notify instead of read", triage and summary, caret dictation — are listed with their status on /en/features.
  • The six-hour limit and the remote-session limit come from our internal product documentation, checked on September 14, 2026.
  • This page's thesis was stated by Florent Maisoncelle, founder of SpeakApp, on September 14, 2026: "In instant voice mode, because the loop is always open, you are always talking to a single session."
  • The properties attributed to a real-time conversation are structural; they are not measurements taken on Google's product.
