Reply to ChatGPT by voice in Chrome
SpeakApp reads each ChatGPT reply aloud in Chrome, one after another, and you say “ok” to answer the conversation that spoke. It works with ChatGPT on the web in Chrome through the SpeakApp extension, for listening and for answering by voice. ChatGPT's Read aloud plays the reply you pick, and Voice is a conversation you hold. SpeakApp reads every finished reply as it arrives. Dictation types your words at the cursor and is a separate function from replying to a conversation.
How do you reply to ChatGPT by voice in Chrome?
- Install SpeakApp and add its extension to Chrome. The extension connects on its own once SpeakApp is running.
- Use ChatGPT in Chrome as usual. When a reply is finished, SpeakApp reads it aloud and shows its card in the toast, the panel SpeakApp shows above your windows, with read, skip, later, reply and open.
- Say “ok” to start a reply to the conversation shown in the toast.
- Speak your answer, then say “enter”. Your message goes into that ChatGPT conversation, without hunting for its window, touching the keyboard or looking at the screen.
Look at the conversation in the toast before you say “ok”: the reply goes to the conversation shown there, not to the window in front of you. The first time, check that your message landed in the right chat.
How is this different from ChatGPT's own voice tools?
According to OpenAI's help pages, ChatGPT gives you two ways to hear its answers. Read aloud plays a reply you pick; in the ChatGPT app on your phone, it is one of the actions under each answer. Voice turns the chat into a spoken conversation in which ChatGPT answers out loud. To answer without the keyboard in a regular chat, you dictate with the microphone. SpeakApp does something else: it reads every finished reply as soon as it is ready and sends your spoken answer into the conversation that spoke.
| What you need | Read aloud | Voice | SpeakApp |
|---|---|---|---|
| Which replies you hear | The one you pick | Every reply of the voice conversation | Every reply, as soon as it is ready |
| How it starts | You press Read aloud | You open a voice conversation | Replies come to you |
| Answering by voice | Type, or dictate with the microphone | Yes, you talk | Yes: “ok”, speak, then “enter” |
| Several conversations | One reply at a time | One voice conversation at a time | Replies from several sessions queue up, one card each |
What about several sessions?
A ChatGPT chat in Chrome, a Claude Desktop session and a Codex task can wait in the same queue, each with its own card, and each answer goes to its own session. The widget's circle counts what is still waiting. The Control Center shows which session is working, done, waiting or stuck, and it covers ChatGPT in Chrome.
Answering by voice straight into the session also works in Claude Desktop (the Code tab and local Claude Cowork) and in the Codex app for Windows. In Cursor, VS Code and Claude.ai you listen, and you dictate your reply into the field. The app-by-app list is on the Features page.
Is dictation the same thing?
No. Dictation types your words at the cursor, in any Windows text field. Replying to a conversation sends your spoken message into the session that spoke. They are two separate functions.

Frequently asked questions
How do I reply to ChatGPT by voice in Chrome?
Use SpeakApp with its Chrome extension. When a ChatGPT reply is read aloud, say “ok”, speak your answer, then say “enter”: your message goes into the ChatGPT conversation that spoke.
What does saying “ok” do?
It starts a reply to the conversation shown in the toast. It is a word you say, not a key. Saying “enter” after your answer sends the message.
Is this the same as ChatGPT's microphone or Voice?
No. In a regular chat you type or dictate with the microphone, and Voice is a spoken conversation in which ChatGPT answers out loud. SpeakApp reads every finished reply as soon as it is ready and sends your spoken answer into the conversation that spoke.
Can I follow ChatGPT and other agents together?
Yes. Replies from several sessions wait in a queue and are read one after another, with one card each in the toast. The widget's circle counts what is still waiting, and the Control Center shows which session is working, done, waiting or stuck.
Where else can I answer by voice straight into the session?
In Claude Desktop (the Code tab and local Claude Cowork) and in the Codex app for Windows. In Cursor, VS Code and Claude.ai you listen, and you dictate your reply into the field.
Can I dictate into other text fields?
Yes. Dictation types your words at the cursor in any Windows text field. It is separate from replying to a conversation.
How do I get ChatGPT to respond with voice?
Start a Voice conversation in ChatGPT: it answers out loud. In a regular chat, Read aloud plays the reply you pick. With SpeakApp and its Chrome extension, every ChatGPT reply on the web is read aloud as soon as it is ready, without a press.
Does ChatGPT have voice replies?
Yes: Voice speaks its answers in a spoken conversation, and Read aloud plays one reply at a time. SpeakApp covers regular chats on the web: it reads each reply, then you say ok, speak your answer and say enter, and it goes into the conversation that spoke.
