Speech to speech: talk with your AI agents
Speech to speech, here, means talking to your AI agents and hearing them answer: with SpeakApp their replies are read to you one after another, you answer out loud and your message lands in the right session. It is not dictation, not plain read-aloud and not a voice changer. ChatGPT's voice mode stays a good fit for a conversation with a single AI; SpeakApp handles several sessions at once, across Claude Code, Codex and ChatGPT.
What does “speech to speech” mean here?
Spoken input, spoken answer. You say something to an AI and it answers out loud. The same phrase also covers other uses, so here is the one this page is about.
- Dictation types your words at the cursor. There is no spoken answer.
- Read-aloud reads a text that already exists. You do not answer it by voice.
- Voice changing turns a recording into another voice. SpeakApp does not do that.
- Talking with your agents: you listen to what your AI agents just finished producing and you answer by speaking. That is what this page covers.
SpeakApp is not a translation service: it is how you work with your agents without staying in front of their windows.
What does ChatGPT's voice mode already do?
According to OpenAI's help center on ChatGPT Voice, it is a spoken conversation with ChatGPT: you talk, it answers out loud. It does that job very well, and if you want to talk with a single AI, it is enough.
The difference is what it asks of you in return: it is a conversation you hold, with ChatGPT, one at a time. When your work is spread across several sessions in several tools, you need something else. The detailed comparison is in the ChatGPT voice mode alternative.
What does speech to speech look like across several sessions?
Picture a Claude Code session preparing a client proposal, a Codex task sorting a sales file and a ChatGPT conversation in Chrome drafting an explanation. Each one finishes at its own time.
- The finished replies wait in a queue and are read to you one after another. One card per conversation shows up at the top right of your screen.
- You say “ok” to answer the conversation on display, then you dictate your answer.
- You say “enter”: your message goes into the session that spoke to you, without you hunting for its window.
You keep track of everything without juggling screens. For the details, see managing several AI agent sessions by voice.
What does the Hey Speak voice agent add?
Hey Speak is SpeakApp's voice agent. You say “Hey Speak”, ask your question and it answers out loud, with no window to open. It answers itself, or it passes your question to ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude on the web and reads you the answer. You can also select a text and ask it to rephrase or translate it: the result is pasted at your cursor.
To speak a clear first instruction, see voice prompting. Copilot, the next step of agent mode, is coming soon. See the AI voice agent on your computer.
Good to know
- SpeakApp does not read sessions that run in the cloud.
- The microphone is closed at install: it opens the first time you use a voice feature.
- For ChatGPT, the SpeakApp extension in Chrome or Edge makes the link.
