Voice prompting: talk to your AI instead of typing
Voice prompting means giving your AI its instructions by speaking instead of typing. With SpeakApp the whole loop runs that way: your agents read you their replies, you answer out loud, and your message lands in the right session. A good spoken prompt says the task, the context, the limits and the result you want; then you correct it out loud, as you would with a colleague. Typing keeps its place for exact names, figures and anything you can't say in the room.
What is voice prompting when you work with AI all day?
You tell your AI what you want out loud, and your words become the prompt. The phrase also covers recorded phone greetings and instructions for call-center voice agents. This page is about the first meaning: you, at work, talking to Claude, Codex or ChatGPT.
Speaking is the easy half. The rest of the day goes to reading what comes back, across several sessions. That is why voice prompting pays off when the reply reaches you by voice too.
How do you follow several AI conversations without switching windows?
Say a Claude Code session is preparing a client proposal, a Codex task is sorting a sales file and a ChatGPT conversation in Chrome is summarizing a report.
- Each reply is read to you when it lands, one after another. A card at the top right of your screen shows which conversation is speaking.
- You say “ok” and answer out loud.
- You say “enter” and your answer goes into that session, without you hunting for its window.
You keep track of everything without juggling screens. More on this in managing several AI agent sessions by voice.
How do you turn a spoken thought into a clear instruction?
You don't need a special wording. Four things are enough, in the order they come to you:
- The task: “Draft a reply to this client.”
- The context: “They asked for a discount on the annual plan.”
- The limits: “Stay polite, no discount, offer a call.”
- The result: “Five lines, ready to send.”
If you change your mind halfway, say so. “Actually, make it shorter” works in a spoken prompt, and the AI follows the correction. Then listen to the reply and refine it out loud.
When should you dictate, and when should you hold a voice conversation?
Dictation writes your words at the cursor, so you can read them over before sending. It suits a long prompt or anything you want to check. According to OpenAI's help center, ChatGPT has its own dictation in its message box.
A voice conversation is back and forth with one AI, spoken both ways, like ChatGPT's voice mode. It suits thinking out loud with a single assistant. See speech to speech.
The SpeakApp loop is for when several sessions work at once: you hear each reply and your answer goes to the session that spoke. You also dictate anywhere on your computer, in the same app.
Which everyday tasks can you prompt by voice?
- Briefing a client proposal while you walk around your office.
- Questioning a research summary: “What's the weakest point in that argument?”
- Reworking an email: “Warmer, and move the request to the first line.”
- Planning a project: “Break this into steps and tell me what you need from me.”
When is typing still the better choice?
- Exact names and figures: read them over on screen. A personal dictionary helps with the names you use often.
- Anything confidential in a shared office: if you wouldn't say it in the room, type it.
- The final check: a contract or a message going to a client deserves a look before it goes out.

Frequently asked questions
Can I dictate an AI prompt and edit it before sending?
Yes. Dictation writes at your cursor, in the message box of your AI, so you can read and change the text before you send it.
Is voice prompting the same as ChatGPT's voice mode?
No. Voice mode is a spoken conversation with ChatGPT. Voice prompting only says that your instruction is spoken; the reply can be text, or it can be read to you, as SpeakApp does across your sessions.
How can I reply to the right AI conversation without switching windows?
With SpeakApp, replies are read one after another. You say “ok” to answer the conversation on display, you speak, then you say “enter”: your message goes into that session.
Do I need special wording for a spoken prompt?
No. Say the task, the context, the limits and the result you want, in your own words. You can correct yourself out loud as you go.
Does voice prompting work with Claude and Codex?
Yes. SpeakApp reads the replies of Claude Code, Codex and ChatGPT and sends your spoken answer into the right session, and its dictation writes wherever your cursor is.
