Claude.ai read aloud: how to hear its answers in Chrome

SpeakApp reads each Claude.ai reply aloud in Chrome, one after another, as soon as it is ready. On Claude.ai it listens, through the SpeakApp extension. Your answer is dictated into the message field and does not go into the conversation on its own. Saying “ok”, then “enter”, answers the session that spoke in Claude Desktop (the Code tab and local Claude Cowork), in the Codex app for Windows and with ChatGPT in Chrome. Hearing a reply does not replace checking code or commands on screen.

How does SpeakApp read Claude.ai aloud?

SpeakApp reads each conversation at its source. For Claude.ai, that is the page in Chrome, through the SpeakApp extension. When Claude finishes a reply, SpeakApp reads it to you without sending you back to the tab. If several replies arrive, they wait in a queue and play one after the other.

Each conversation gets a card in the toast, the panel SpeakApp shows above your windows, with read, skip, later, reply and open. The widget's circle counts what is still waiting.

How do you set it up?

  1. Install SpeakApp, then add its extension to Chrome from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Keep SpeakApp running: the extension connects to it on its own.
  3. Open Claude.ai in Chrome and use it as usual. Each finished reply is read aloud.

How do you answer a Claude.ai reply?

On Claude.ai, your answer does not go into the conversation on its own. Click into the message field, dictate your answer, then send the message as usual. Dictation types at your cursor in any Windows text field, so it works there.

The “ok”, speak, “enter” loop, which sends the message straight into the session, covers Claude Desktop (the Code tab and local Claude Cowork), the Codex app for Windows and ChatGPT in Chrome. Claude.ai is not on that list. The app-by-app list is on the Features page.

How is this different from Claude's voice mode?

According to Anthropic's help page, Claude has a voice mode, in beta, on Claude Mobile (iOS and Android), in Claude Desktop and on the web. On the web and in Claude Desktop, you open it from the sound wave symbol in the lower right corner of the chat window. You speak, Claude speaks back, and you can switch between text and voice within the same conversation.

Voice mode is for talking with Claude inside one conversation. It does not read aloud the replies of your Claude Code or Claude Cowork sessions while you work on something else. SpeakApp reads the replies of the conversations you already have, as they finish, and lets you work elsewhere in the meantime.

When should you open the conversation instead?

Hearing a reply does not replace checking it. When a reply holds code or a command, use open in the toast and read it on screen.
